Nathan Coppedge 5X counterweight mass times 1/4 is 1.25 effective leverage, which can be lifted by 3X effective leverage from the ball when the ball is unsupported. On the other hand on the other motion, since the marble is supported and moving horizontally, it's effective leverage is closer to 1X mass * 0.5 for mass * distance when supported yields 0.5+ resistance to the 1.25 effective leverage counterweight when the marble is supported. Now it appears there is a 0.75 cushion on the rising motion and a 1.75 cushion on the falling motion, suggesting 5X counterweight mass is a workable ratio but not ideal. The new measurements indicate 7X counterweight is ideal for 3/4 lever and 1X marble, as now 3X 1 can lift 0.25X 7 (= 1.75) with a cushion of 1.25, and so too the same 0.25X 7 (=1.75) counterweight can lift a 1X 0.5 marble with the same cushion of 1.25. Therefore in this case the upward and downward advantage is maximized.

The falling ratio is 3 versus 1.25. The rising ratio is 1.25 versus 0.5+ (supported horizontally the ball is not applying significant leverage, as its motion is directed horizontally). Good numbers. The counterweight does have a lot of mass, but it has less effective leverage, which my math teacher taught me still makes a difference. I asked him to tell me everything he knew about leverage, and it took him like three weeks as I recall. I lapped it up.
