Punjabi Subaltern Summit - 2012, Chandigarh

Course Description

The stature of an intellectual in the Punjabi society is so insignificant, that in a way it can be considered as one of the reasons why the squalid excesses of consumerism, feudalism, parochialism, communitarianism, political opportunism and religious fundamentalism have seeped into the entrails of the state. If one were to seek some refuge in humor then this modified quote – which was Clemenceau’s take on America in its original form – seems apt to describe the situation, “Punjab is the only society that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.” Overburdened with past and a misplaced sense of history, the parallel exposition of peoples’ consciousness was tacitly overlooked under the post-traumatic stress of the partition, the green revolution and terrorism.

The disparities between the haves and have-nots also need an intense and urgent debate. While some base it on quantifiable notions of caste, class, religion and gender; others argue that the true definition of the Punjabi downtrodden cannot be resolved with such monolithic and formulaic deductions. There is an acute under-representation in terms of caste and gender on one hand, the alarming decline of the hapless farmer on the other. You have the socially-excluded, the economically-excluded and the constitutionally-excluded. Thinkers from all strata urge that historically-apt terms attributed to the deprived fail to address the expansiveness of the problem — that we need a new one. Till a consensus is reached, let us categorize them as the Punjabi Subaltern.

The Punjabi Subaltern Summit is a bold attempt to reclaim the mantle of Punjabiyat. To break free from the parochial structures that have suppressed the social narrative on lesser-known issues like caste, religion, representation and federalism. By harnessing the spirit and dialect of new media, it strives to infuse the Punjabi intellectual mainstream with a sense of purpose and direction, bringing back the long-lost ebullience into its ethos. A place where politicians, thinkers, change agents, writers, artists, academicians and media professionals will try to find a common ground on the pressing problems that plague our state.
