Abstract

Research strategies included an in-depth investigation of twentieth century music developments, and particularly the compositional directions undertaken by composers after 1945. Also, developments pertinent to the expansion of instrumental resources, and particular to saxophone performance, were researched by consulting source books and several dissertations on saxophone performance practice. In addition, an interview was conducted with the composer to gain insight into the work, and to discuss the performance demands made on the saxophonist and how those demands could be realized. Finally, a selective list of compositions for saxophone is provided which represent the new modern classical performance practice standard.
